e QNAP TVS-871T is a "network attached storage" (NAS) device for file sharing. It can be expanded up to 56 3 1/4" SATA drives, which is 448TB raw space for 8TB drives.
Adding storage space
After adding disks:
Step 1 - create storage pool
- Storage Manager
- "New Storage Pool"
- Select all disks
- Select RAID 6, Next
- Turn off snapshot reserved space
- Create, OK to delete data
Step 2 - Create new volume
Select storage pool, Create, New Volume
Choose Thick Multiple Volume (for some reason Static Single VOlume does not work).
(3) Set the volume to max
(4) Choose a volume name.
DataA = main storage, DataB = backup; DataA1, DataA2, etc. for each expansion unit.
(5) To allow for large volumes, select "File system option"
(6) Set "Bytes per inode" to the maximum (65536).
(7) Create a shared folder with the same name.
(8) Next, OK to warning
Initialization will take a few minutes (see progress under "Storage Space" in Storage Manager)
Setup
Connection to admin utility
- Unpack, install drives, turn on, connect to network
- From a workstation on the network, download and install Qfinder Pro (https://www.qnap.com/i/useng/utility/)
- Run, click Yes" to allow network access
- If it ask to set up SMTP, you can click "No" and do this later
- Select the device, click "Login" (see right)
- Default username and password is "admin" and "admin"
Users: change admin default password, create new user for network shares
- At first logon, change the admin password: Control Panel, Users, admin row, Action = change password. (see right)
- In Users, create a new user and password (e.g., user4sharedata, 123456)
Network settings
In a lab setting, use a fixed IP address and DNS name.
- Control Panel, System Settings, Network
- Click "here" to open the Network and Virtual Switch.
- Interfaces, edit settings of the adapter that's connected
- Configure with static IP
