NAS - network attached storage = fileserver that is not a full Windows or Linux server.

Lessons learned as of 2016-09-27

RAID6 is slower than RAID5 for read/write.

The TVS-EC1080 is a better option than TVS-871T for processing, as it is cheaper and supports RAID10. Maximize the meory, and add the SSD mSATA cache drive. You probably need to use the QNAP SSD, but you should be able to use any memory. Look for specs at http://shop.qnap.com/.

TVS-871T with RAID6 is a good archive option.

TVS-871T performance

The benchmarks below show that without other operations underway, the  NAS has a simialr performance to a decidated server (Xeon with 3TB drives, ~5 years old). However, when doing simultaneous read/writes, performance dropped dramatically. This may be RAID6 issues.
