Reflections on 2022 class
Absolutely does not work to have students select their own group. Many groups just chatted and did not do any work.
Need to set up group dynamic; class dynamic was a problem, people did not trust each other, which meant they asked to not be randomly assigned. I did as they asked, but that turned out to be a mistake.
2022 students are happy to ignore what I ask them to do; they will complete a written activity, but they will simply not do what asked in class.
The learning activities really work, based on feedback.
Getting feedback on activities really helps know what worked.
Reflections week-to-week are great, help see what is picked up in podcasts, activities. Also gives a chance to see where class is at, as students reported feeling stressed with mid-terms
Need a more rigorous way to measure participation and writing. People don’t report accurately whether they have done some activities
If people don’t respond to a question, asking them to answer in a forum leads them to answer.
Using demonstrations of activities is something I should add. The demonstration of the 90 sec (3 x 30 sec) talk helped, I think.
Might move the flow writing content earlier.
Design activities that the TA’s can run - two probably three each; I can frame activities.
Clarifying grading, run through a couple of times.
Have 2nd assignment to submit optional second blog, report and video (so can be graded separately).
TA’s - use notes more.
TA’s - earlier identifying problems - right from first email, cc me.
Writing feedback - “use this time”.
Ask students to move?
Sometimes, students are doing what I asked, even if they seem like they’re slacking off.
Need a way to do feedback only to those who have posted new content…. well CCLE should do that….
How to deal with people who are not writing? Catch early I think
