Dear Colleagues:

As you prepare for your winter and spring courses, we encourage you to incorporate participation in UCLA Undergraduate Research Week into your syllabi as an assignment or opportunity for your students.

Undergraduate Research Week will be held from May 23-27, 2022. All students are invited to share their research or creative projects at the virtual Undergraduate Research and Creativity Showcase, our largest Undergraduate Research Week event, by submitting abstracts or artist statements by April 15. Over 1,000 students participate in the Showcase each year.

Incorporating Undergraduate Research Week Into Your Courses

Students from every class level and field of study are invited to present at the Showcase and other Undergraduate Research Week events.

If you are teaching in winter quarter, you can encourage your students to present their research or creative project course assignments at the Showcase. For example, during the course, you might have students write abstracts or artist statements or present their work to the class as additional preparation for Undergraduate Research Week.

If you are teaching in spring quarter, you can include Undergraduate Research Week participation as a required or optional part of your course or give extra credit to attend the Showcase and submit a writeup. While the deadline for students to submit abstracts or artist statements is April 15, we are happy to work with you individually on this timeline.

Student Opportunities to Participate

Students can share individual or group projects at every stage of the research or creative process. They can present their work in one of three ways at the Showcase:

  1. a 5-10 minute pre-recorded video presentation submitted by May 12

  1. a creative exhibit or multimedia submitted by May 12

  1. a 5-10 minute live Zoom presentation on May 24

Additionally, your students may be eligible to be judged for a Dean’s Prize or Library Prize for Undergraduate Research.

We encourage you to consider whether Undergraduate Research Week would be a valuable part of your course and students’ academic experience. If you would like to know more, please contact us directly or visit our website. We are happy to consult with you about incorporating Undergraduate Research Week (and/or research or creative inquiry more generally) into your courses at UCLA.

Sincerely,
